Skilled Trades Worker Foreman

BASIC FUNCTION:
The Skilled Trades Worker Foreman provides assistance in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating the District’s maintenance team; to serve as foreman in the maintenance department; to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks and operations involved in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, equipment and facilities.

The Skilled Trades Worker Foreman works closely with support staff, specific staff and outside organizations to supervise the work of others and is responsible for ensuring that maintenance operations and services meets the needs of the District.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

• Assists in planning scheduling and organizing needed maintenance and repair work; visits District sites, identifies and assesses maintenance needs. Supervises, reviews and inspects work

• Serves as foreman of a maintenance team; assigns, directs and coordinates the work of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance workers in the accomplishment of maintenance projects; reviews work completed for accuracy and compliance to established work standards and procedures

• Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in several areas of the building trades, including HVAC, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting

• Determines and obtains equipment, supplies and materials needed to complete repair projects

• Orders supplies and materials for specific maintenance projects; maintains appropriate supply levels; checks for optimum prices and satisfactory quality

• Assists in screening, selection and evaluation of maintenance workers

• Prepares work layouts and instructions for and to assigned personnel

• Assists in training of staff in safe and effective maintenance methods and techniques, including the safe and proper use of equipment

• Provides input for estimates of time and materials needed to complete maintenance jobs

• Operates, maintains and performs minor repair of a variety of standard and specialized equipment and tools used in the performance of required duties

• Reports major maintenance need as discovered by the teams to the Maintenance Supervisor

• Confers with the Maintenance Supervisor or Director, school site administrators, and other maintenance staff to clarify and coordinate needed maintenance activities and operations of the team

• Establishes and maintains appropriate logs and records; prepares related reports upon request

• Performs related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

• Appropriate health and safety regulations pertaining to maintenance work, equipment and chemicals used

• Methods, procedures, equipment and tools of the building trades including carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and painting

Ability to:

• Carry out a variety of directives and policies in an independent and effective manner

• Plan, organize and coordinate the work of maintenance service staff to meet schedules and timelines in an environment with constantly changing priorities

• Train, supervise and evaluate the work of others

• Establish and maintain appropriate logs and records and to prepare reports as requested

• Operate a variety of maintenance equipment

• Prepare accurate time, material and cost estimates

• Successfully identify problems, secure relevant information, identify probable cause(s), and take appropriate action to resolve problems identified

• Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing

• Demonstrate effective listening skills

• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties

• Perform heavy physical labor including but not limited to the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties

• Maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive information

• Work independently with limited supervision

• Read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams

• Use technology, machines and/or tools appropriate to the position

• Follow good health and safety principles and practices

• Demonstrate ability to work effectively and harmoniously with administrators, teachers, classified employees, students, parents, community members, vendors, among others

• Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively both in written form and orally

• Experience working with culturally diverse staff

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid California Driver's License

• High School Graduate or equivalent

• Knowledge and Experience in the Building Trades

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• 12-month position

• Salary schedule placement: Level 24

• Salary Schedule: SEIU Salary Schedule 9.26
